NUCLEAR ACTOR-VISTS EXPLODE LOCAL FESTIVITIES

Guerilla actor-vist theatre troupe, Atomic Oz is exploding the Newtown Festival with funk and freaky facts in their satirical comedy and musical performance which covers the history of the Australian uranium industry.
The play gives an overview from 1949 to present day of how the corrupt dealings of politicians and business people have bulldozed public opinion, unethically shrouded the industry in secrecy and violated Aboriginal land rights. Malcom Fraser, Bob Hawke and John Howard are all celebrated in caricature performances with John Howard's future intentions for the nuclear industry.

Of great concern to the group is the proposal to expand and build another nuclear reactor at Sydney's Lucas Heights. "The outcome of the 10 November election will determine whether the new reactor gets the go-ahead. If a Liberal coalition wins the election, construction on the new reactor in suburban Sydney will begin in February" said Atomic Oz spokesperson, Ben Coyne.

Atomic Oz believes this is a crucial issue for all Australia, and particularly the public of Sydney. An intial area of 80 kilometres radius surrounding Lucas Heights is predicted to be contaminated in the event of a nuclear accident. The group recently performed at Cronulla Beach where radioactive waste from the Lucas Heights nuclear reactor is periodically dumped into the sea - with no warning to the public.

Oz Atomic spokesperson Dean Baigent-Mercer said, "We had to fight back our desires to swim at Cronulla as we didn't want to risk being in contact with radioactive waste". Atomic Oz have travelled from Perth, performing in Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane, Lismore, Byron Bay and even Ingham. Along the way the troupe have linked with local anti-nuclear activists and their numbers have swelled to 18.
